Abstract
This document presents and details the main results obtained within task 3 “Characterization and examination of the properties of irradiated nuclear fuel analogs” of the High Level Waste Unit (HLWU) of CIEMAT within the framework of the PID2021-124913OA-I00 project (IONMAT project) funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (Agencia Española de Investigación, AEI).
For comparison, characterization performed on pellets prepared by the same technological process (within tasks 1 and 2), i.e. dry powder method or co-precipitation, will be described, evaluated and discussed. Characterization will be carried out by a broad set of methods/techniques: XRD, Raman spectroscopy, particle size distribution (laser diffraction), density (geometrical, by immersion or pycnometric), BET by physisorption (nitrogen) and surface morphology by SEM. The grain size of the samples will be estimated by means of the linear intercept method.
The aim is to evaluate the effect on the microstructure of the fabrication procedure and assess the changes in the composition and morphology of pellets.
